Washing Machine Smells Musty

Washing Machine Smells Musty – Tips to Get Rid of

The nightmare par excellence – smelly laundry! But where does this come from? Is it the softener or the washing powder? Is the washing machine broken? Neither! In most cases, bacteria and moulds are responsible for bad odours that come from the washing machine and eventually settle into the tissues of your laundry. These may have manifested themselves in different parts of your washing machine. There are various objections to the fact that this will happen in the first place, but also some ways to get rid of this evil.

Why Does My Washing Machine Smell Musty?

In today’s world, more and more people are turning to energy efficiency. Where savings can be made, this should be done. The manufacturers of modern washing machines install additional programs, quick-washing machines, savings programs and much more. This effectively washes and saves, but the high temperatures that many of the substances responsible for bad odours “take away”, dissolve or rinse with when washing is no longer present. So remnants form in the hoses, on the drum and in other places that you can only perceive with your nose.

To the chagrin of all those affected. In the efficiency classes, A+++ or A++ are mainly washed with savings programs that do not produce high temperatures, which would ensure the removal of the stinking remains. Washing at temperatures of 30°C or 50°C promotes the formation of moulds or bacteria so that they spread not only in the machine but also on your laundry, which can cause health damage.

Places in your washing machine that are damp, warm and flooded with oxygen are the best breeding ground for such culprits. But how do you put these micro-little plague spirits on your body? Even stale old water, which has accumulated in your machine, starts to smell bad over time. But, one of the main reasons for the bad smell is very often the laundry drum. If bacteria and fungi settle here, they stick to your clothes very quickly, it then smells very strict and – if you are susceptible or sensitive to it – simply gets sick.

The detergent compartment is another place where mould likes to form. However, you can see it there and can easily remove it. Bacteria also feel comfortable in the lint sieve and old rubber seals, which is an additional source for the bad odours. Once a spot is infested, it takes its course and spreads quickly throughout the washing machine.

Tips to Remove the Smell in a Washing Machine?

Have you noticed a bad smell from your washing machine? Then it is high time to do something about it before it can take on its scale.

What Should be Done to Rid the Washing Machine of Bad odours?

Rid the Washing Machine of Bad odours

First of all, you should become aware of the reasons and locate the stench.

  • Das are the reasons: Mold formation on detergent residues in the detergent compartment.
  • A layer of grease has settled in the drum.
  • Deposits with mould formation in old rubber seals (e.B. at the door)
  • On the floor of the washing machine is old, stale water.
  • Mould, bacteria and germs that may be in different parts of the washing machine

Now that you know the reasons for this, you need a few tips to put an end to it all.

Tip No. 1:

  • Sprinkle 50 g of soda directly into the drum of the washing machine.
  • Now add 50 ml of vinegar essence to the detergent chamber for the main wash.
  • Now select a washing program that runs at least 60°C.
  • Start the machine and let this wash pass without washing.
  • After completing the program, all you have to do is wipe out the rubber seals and detergent compartment.

This home remedy has several advantages: It reacts together and corrects bad odours, acts antibacterially and as a fungicide against fungi. At the same time, it is approaching the lime in your machine.

Tip No. 2:

  • Thoroughly wipe out all rubber seals, especially those that are located around the door opening. Pay attention to small grooves and wrinkles – deposits like to accumulate there, are overlooked, and you wonder why the musty smell is still there.
  • Remove the detergent and softener compartment and thoroughly clean it with warm water and, if necessary, a brush. If the dirt is too stubborn, you can also leave the tray in hot water for a few minutes before cleaning it and then putting it back in place.
  • The lint sieve – a stove for coarse dirt! Here, laundry flues, hair and the like gather. A feel-good oasis for bacteria.
  • Remove it (as instructed by the manufacturer of the washing machine) and clean it thoroughly.
  • The residual water, which can remain at the bottom of the machine, is not little responsible for the nasty stench. You can read how to remove it in your operating instructions for the respective washing machine.
  • On some machines, there is a small drain hose behind an aperture.
  • When you have done all this, set the highest program (usually 95° C) and let the washing machine pass through without laundry. This eliminates the last odours.
  • If you do not add a descaler to your washing programs, you can also descale the machine externally. To do this, take either commercially available descaling agent or a large dash of vinegar essence, which you put in the softener compartment in your washing machine. Now start a cooking program (60° C, 90° C or 95° C) and let it go through without laundry.

She avoids it from stinking out of your machine again if you start a cooking program at least once a month. The high temperature ensures that the bacteria and fungi are deprived of the habitat in the long term. You should also leave the door, and the detergent compartment opens after each wash. Thus, the interior of the machine can dry and fewer to hardly any deposits form.

Conclusion

No one likes stinking laundry, so prevention is better than having to endure the bad smell. Should it still smell harsh, only a few steps are necessary to put an end to all “evil offenders” and the smell and in the long run. The laundry and the machine smell very pleasant again.
